Car Rental Requirements in Serbia: Age, Licence and Deposit
Planning to hire a car in Niš? Here is what you need: age, licence, deposit and insurance, plus practical tips to avoid surprises at the counter.

Renting a car in Serbia is straightforward, but like anywhere, it pays to know the rules before you arrive. Understanding the car rental requirements in Serbia means no awkward surprises at the desk and a quicker start to your trip. Below we cover age limits, licences, the deposit, insurance and what is included when you hire a car with Line Rent a Car in Niš.
Basic car rental requirements in Serbia
Every rental company sets its own conditions, but most follow a similar pattern. At Line Rent a Car the essentials are:
Minimum age: 21 years
Driving licence: held for at least two years
Identification: a passport or national ID card
Deposit: required at pick-up
These apply whether you collect the car at Niš Airport or arrange delivery elsewhere.
Your driving licence
Bring the physical card, not a photo or scan. Licences issued in Latin script are generally straightforward. If yours is in a different alphabet, it is sensible to check with the authorities in your country whether an International Driving Permit is recommended for Serbia, and to carry one if in doubt. Members of the diaspora with a foreign licence should simply bring the licence they normally drive on.
The deposit
A deposit is always required when you collect the car. It is returned once the vehicle comes back in the agreed condition. The amount depends on the car category and the level of insurance, so ask when booking and make sure you have the means to cover it on arrival. Be wary of any offer anywhere promising "no deposit"; that usually means a catch elsewhere.
Insurance: what is covered
Every rental includes base insurance. For extra peace of mind, you can choose full comprehensive cover (known locally as kasko) at an additional cost. This is popular with travellers who plan longer drives, mountain roads or trips across borders.
Before you sign, ask yourself:
How much driving am I planning, and on what kind of roads?
Will I be parking in busy city streets overnight?
Would I prefer to minimise my financial exposure in case of damage?
If you answer yes to the last question, full cover is usually worth it.
What is included in the price
Our "from" prices start at around 15€ per day for city cars such as the VW Up! and Škoda Citigo. Every rental includes:
Base insurance
Unlimited mileage
Flight tracking for airport pick-ups
Optional extras include child seats, GPS, roof racks and an additional driver. Book them in advance so they are ready when you arrive.
Driving abroad
Planning to visit Bulgaria, North Macedonia or another neighbouring country? Cross-border travel is allowed with prior notice. You will receive a Green Card, and an insurance surcharge applies. Never cross a border without telling us first, as your cover may not be valid. Our guide to driving from Niš to Sofia and Skopje explains the practical side.
Tips to avoid surprises
Most rental disputes come from small misunderstandings. These habits help:
Inspect the car at pick-up. Walk around it with our staff and make sure existing marks are noted. Taking a few photos on your phone is a good idea.
Agree the fuel arrangement. Know what level the car should be returned with.
Register every driver. Only drivers named on the agreement are covered.
Agree pick-up and return times. We offer 24/7 pick-up and return by arrangement, so tell us about late flights in advance.
Keep the documents in the car. The rental agreement and vehicle papers should stay with you while driving.
Report problems early. If a warning light appears or something feels wrong, call us straight away.
Choosing the right category
A small car is perfect for city driving and short trips, while a Toyota Yaris or Renault Clio offers a little more comfort for longer journeys. Families may prefer the Citroën C4 Spacetourer, and groups of up to nine can travel together in the Citroën Jumpy 8+1. If you need a car for a month or more, our long-term car rental includes insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance and a replacement car.
