Niš to Sofia and Skopje by Car: Green Card and Route Tips
Sofia and Skopje are both within easy reach of Niš. Here is how to plan a cross-border drive in a rental car, from the Green Card to border tips.

One of the great advantages of starting a trip in Niš is how close you are to two other Balkan capitals. Sofia lies roughly 160 km to the east and Skopje around 200 km to the south, making a drive from Niš to Sofia and Skopje by car a realistic day trip or the start of a wider Balkan tour. Here is what you need to know before you cross the border in a rental car.
Can you take a rental car from Niš to Sofia or Skopje?
Yes. With Line Rent a Car, cross-border travel is allowed with prior notice. When you book, simply tell us which countries you plan to visit. We then provide:
A Green Card, the international certificate of motor insurance
The vehicle registration documents and rental agreement
Confirmation that cross-border travel is authorised
An insurance surcharge applies for travel abroad. Please never cross a border without letting us know first: your insurance may not be valid and you could be refused entry at the border.
Driving from Niš to Sofia
The route to Sofia follows the motorway east past Niška Banja towards Pirot and Dimitrovgrad, then on to the Gradina–Kalotina border crossing. On the Bulgarian side the road continues to Sofia. Under normal conditions, allow around two and a half to three hours, plus time at the border.
Things to keep in mind
Serbia uses motorway toll booths, so keep some cash or a card handy.
Bulgaria uses an electronic vignette system for its roads. Check the current rules and buy one online before you set off.
Border queues can vary considerably, especially at weekends and during holidays.
Driving from Niš to Skopje
To reach Skopje, head south on the motorway past Leskovac and Vranje to the Preševo–Tabanovce crossing into North Macedonia. From the border it is a short drive to the capital. In good conditions, the whole journey takes roughly two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic and the border.
North Macedonia also has toll stations on its motorways. Carry some local currency or a card, and check the latest payment options before your trip.
Tips for a smooth border crossing
Keep documents together: passports or ID cards for everyone, your driving licence, the Green Card and the rental agreement.
Check entry requirements for your nationality before you go, as rules differ between countries.
Travel early to avoid the busiest times at the border.
Fill up in advance so you are not searching for fuel near the border.
Have your phone ready with offline maps in case roaming is expensive.
Follow instructions from border officers and be patient during checks.
Which car is best for cross-border trips?
For two people travelling light, a comfortable compact like the Škoda Scala is economical and pleasant on the motorway. If you want an automatic for long stretches, the Toyota Corolla Automatic makes the drive more relaxing. Families with lots of luggage often prefer the Citroën C4 Spacetourer, while groups can travel together in the Citroën Jumpy 8+1.
Unlimited mileage is included in every rental, which matters when you are covering a few hundred kilometres in a day.
Combining Sofia and Skopje in one trip
Some travellers visit both cities on a loop: Niš to Sofia, then south-west through Bulgaria to Skopje, and back north to Niš. It is a rewarding route, but it means more border crossings and a longer day. Two or three days is a more comfortable pace, especially if you want to see the cities rather than just drive through them.
If you are finishing your trip in Belgrade instead of Niš, a return there is possible by arrangement.
Prefer not to drive?
If you need to reach Sofia or Skopje airport but do not want to handle the border yourself, our transfer service with a driver covers both cities. Compare the two options in our article on transfer or rental car from Niš Airport.
