Best Day Trips from Niš by Car: Spas, Gorges and Mountains
From spa towns to mountain peaks, southern Serbia is perfect for exploring by car. Here are the best day trips from Niš and how to plan them.

Niš is a lively city with plenty to see, but some of the best experiences in southern Serbia lie just outside it. Spa towns, dramatic gorges, medieval fortresses and mountain resorts are all within a comfortable drive. Public transport to many of these places is infrequent, so day trips from Niš by car are by far the most flexible way to explore. Here are our favourites, from the closest to the most ambitious.
Niška Banja
Just around 10 km east of the city, Niška Banja is a traditional spa town with a pleasant park, thermal springs and cafés. It makes an easy half-day trip, or a relaxing stop on your first afternoon after collecting a car at Niš Airport. Combine it with a walk on the hills above the town for views back over the Nišava valley.
Sićevo Gorge
Continue east from Niška Banja and the road follows the Nišava river into the Sićevo Gorge, a protected landscape of steep limestone cliffs. There are viewpoints along the old road, and the area is popular with walkers, climbers and photographers. Drive carefully: the road is narrow in places and you will want to stop often.
Sokobanja and Soko Grad
Sokobanja, roughly an hour or so north of Niš, is one of Serbia's best-known spa resorts. It has a compact centre, plenty of restaurants and walking paths into the surrounding hills and towards Lake Bovan. Just outside the town, the ruins of Soko Grad, a medieval fortress on a rocky outcrop, offer superb views over the Moravica valley.
Tips for Sokobanja
Arrive early in summer, when the town gets busy.
Wear proper shoes for the walk up to Soko Grad.
Try local dishes at a traditional restaurant before driving back.
Vrnjačka Banja
Further north-west, about two hours' drive from Niš, Vrnjačka Banja is Serbia's most popular spa town, with elegant villas, a long promenade and mineral springs. It works well as a long day trip or an overnight stay. The drive takes you through the fertile valley of the West Morava, dotted with vineyards and small towns.
Kopaonik
Kopaonik is Serbia's largest ski resort and a beautiful destination in summer too, with hiking trails, mountain biking and fresh air. From Niš the drive takes roughly two and a half hours, the last part on winding mountain roads. In winter, check road conditions before leaving and make sure the car has suitable winter equipment.
If you would rather not drive mountain roads in snow, our transfers to Kopaonik with a driver are a comfortable alternative.
Stara Planina
Stara Planina, on the border with Bulgaria, is wilder and less developed than Kopaonik. It is known for waterfalls, remote villages and sweeping ridges. Allow around two hours each way, and set off early to make the most of daylight. Some roads in the area are steep and narrow, so take your time.
Choosing a car for day trips
The right car depends on where you are going and how many of you there are:
Spa towns and short drives: an economical city car such as the Renault Clio is ideal.
Mountains and longer trips: a higher-riding Citroën C3 Aircross feels more confident on winding roads.
Families and friends: the Citroën C4 Spacetourer or the Citroën Jumpy 8+1 keeps everyone together.
Unlimited mileage is included, so you can combine several stops in one day without worrying about extra costs. Ask for a roof rack if you are bringing skis or bikes.
Practical tips for driving around Niš
Download offline maps, as mobile coverage can be patchy in the mountains.
Fill up before heading into rural areas where petrol stations are fewer.
Carry some cash for small cafés, parking and village shops.
Remember that dipped headlights are expected during the day in Serbia.
In winter, allow extra time and check the forecast before setting off.

Frequently asked questions
Which day trip from Niš is best for a short stay?
Niška Banja and the Sićevo Gorge are the easiest, as both are close to the city and can be done in a few hours.
Can I visit Kopaonik by rental car in winter?
Yes, but check conditions before you leave, drive carefully on mountain roads and allow extra time.
Do I need a large car for these trips?
Not usually. A small car handles most routes well, though a compact SUV is more comfortable in the mountains.
